New York coach Adam Gase's job does not hang in the balance of the Jets' Thursday night game against the Denver Broncos, according to NFL Network and The Athletic.
However, The Athletic's report said Gase could be fired if the 0-3 Jets were to get embarrassed by the injury-riddled 0-3 Broncos, who are starting their third quarterback in four weeks.
The speculation regarding Gase's job security has intensified as the Jets have lost by a bigger deficit each week -- a 10-point loss to the Buffalo Bills in Week 1; an 18-point loss to the San Francisco 49ers in Week 2; a 29-point loss to the Indianapolis Colts last week. The minus-57 point differential is the worst in the NFL.
Gase, 7-12 in his second year leading the Jets, is now being asked about his job security.
"I can't focus on that. It's wasted energy," Gase said this week. "It's not going to help me at all. All I can do is make sure I get our guys into the right headspace to go out there and play well. ... If I waste my energy on anything else, it's counterproductive to what we're doing."
With the Jets also an injury-ravaged club, the two reports suggest Gase would be safe even if a Brett Rypien-led Broncos team comes into New York and sends the Jets to 0-4.
However, if the Broncos embarrass the Jets, The Athletic reports that Jets CEO Christopher Johnson would be compelled to make a change.
Johnson recently called Gase a "brilliant offensive mind," but the numbers don't bear that out in Gase's tenure. The Jets are last in the NFL with 263.7 yards per game, last in scoring (12.3) points per game, and next-to-last in passing yards per game at 172.3.
The Jets finished last in 2019 in yards per game (273.0) and next-to-last in scoring (17.3).
