Top-seeded Daniil Medvedev, fresh off an appearance in the Australian Open final, was knocked out in the first round of the ABN AMRO World Tennis Tournament on Wednesday, falling 7-6 (4), 6-4 to Serbia's Dusan Lajovic in Rotterdam, Netherlands.
Medvedev, who lost to Serbia's Novak Djokovic in the final at Melbourne, fell behind 6-2 in the first-set tiebreaker against Lajovic and couldn't recover. Lajovic got the only break of the second set for a 5-4 lead, then served out the match at love.
Third-seeded Alexander Zverev of Germany also dropped his opening match, falling 7-5, 6-3 to Kazakhstan's Alexander Bublik. Alejandro Davidovich Fokina upset fifth-seeded Spanish countryman Roberto Bautista Agut 6-2, 7-6 (3).
In second-round action Wednesday, fourth-seeded Andrey Rublev of Russia eliminated Great Britain's Andy Murray 7-5, 6-2.
Joining Rublev in the quarterfinals are Russia's Karen Khachanov, who routed Great Britain's Cameron Norrie 6-2, 6-2, and Japan's Kei Nishikori, who earned a 6-3, 2-6, 7-5 victory over Australia's Alex de Minaur.
Other first-round match winners were sixth-seeded David Goffin of Belgium and Tommy Paul of the United States.
Argentina Open
Indian qualifier Sumit Nagal stunned second-seeded Cristian Garin of Chile 6-4, 6-3 to reach the quarterfinals in Buenos Aires.
Nagal, ranked 150th in the world, amassed a whopping 19 break points in the match and converted 12 of them. Garin won only 43 percent of the points on his own serve.
Also advancing to the quarterfinals were fourth-seeded Miomir Kecmanovic and seventh-seeded Laslo Djere, both of Serbia, and fifth-seeded Albert Ramos-Vinolas of Spain.
