WASHINGTON, D.C.: The U.S. weather agency, NOAA, plans to lay off 1,029 workers following 1,300 job cuts earlier this year.
This will reduce its staff by 20 percent as part of President Donald Trump's effort to shrink the federal workforce. Scientists warn these cuts could harm weather forecasting and climate research.
All government agencies must submit layoff plans by March 13. The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) plans to cut over 80,000 jobs, raising concerns about veterans' healthcare. Layoffs could begin in June.
Trump and his adviser Elon Musk have already cut more than 100,000 federal jobs, and more reductions are expected. While some agree the government should be more efficient, a recent poll found that 57 percent of Americans oppose mass layoffs.
Federal workers also face spending limits, including restrictions on buying office supplies.
At U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services, at least some workers were ordered to stop using government "purchase cards" used to buy equipment and pay for other expenses for 30 days, with limits reduced to $1, according to an agency email reviewed by Reuters.
The Department of Homeland Security, which oversees immigration, did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
