Jonas Brodin's lower-body injury will prevent the Minnesota Wild defenseman and Swedish Olympian from playing in Milan, The Athletic reported Tuesday.
Brodin has been out since Jan. 12 and is several weeks away from returning. Sweden's Olympic tournament begins Feb. 11 against host Italy.
Brodin, 32, has three goals and 15 points in 42 games and ranks third among Wild defensemen in average ice time (21:20). He represented Sweden at last year's 4 Nations Face-Off and is a three-time world championship medalist (gold in 2017, bronze in 2024 and 2025).
His absence would deplete the Swedish defense corps, whose injured members include the Tampa Bay Lightning's Victor Hedman (elbow) and the Pittsburgh Penguins' Erik Karlsson (lower body). Both players are expected back before the Olympics.
Sweden's other defensemen are Rasmus Andersson of the Vegas Golden Knights, Philip Broberg of the St. Louis Blues, Rasmus Dahlin of the Buffalo Sabres, Oliver Ekman-Larsson of the Toronto Maple Leafs and Gustav Forsling of the Florida Panthers.
Possible substitutes for Brodin include Simon Edvinsson (Detroit Red Wings), Mattias Ekholm (Edmonton Oilers) and Hampus Lindholm (Boston Bruins).
Sweden coach Sam Hallam indicated Monday that he expects Anaheim Ducks forward Leo Carlsson to miss the Olympics due to a thigh injury.
Carlsson, a third-year forward, leads the Ducks with 44 points in 44 games but went pointless in six straight appearances shortly before he exited the lineup last week.
Sweden will also face Finland on Feb. 13 and Slovakia in Feb. 14 in round-robin play. The Olympic gold-medal game is scheduled for Feb. 22.
