William Contreras had four hits including a homer and drove in four runs as the Milwaukee Brewers hammered the visiting Arizona Diamondbacks 13-1 to win the rubber game of the series Thursday.
Sal Frelick homered, Brice Turang and Garrett Mitchell each had two hits and scored three runs, and Tyler Black and Luis Rengifo had three RBIs for Milwaukee. The Brewers outscored the Diamondbacks 28-9 in the three-game series and have won three of four.
Contreras reached base five times, scored three runs and finished a triple short of the cycle while continuing his career assault on Arizona pitching. He is hitting .430 with eight homers, nine doubles and 26 RBIs in 25 games against the Diamondbacks.
Arizona first baseman Ildemaro Vargas had two hits and extended his season-opening hitting streak to 23 games, tied with Edgar Renteria (Atlanta, 2006) for the longest in the majors to open a season since 1940, according to Elias Sports Bureau. Ron LeFlore hit in 30 straight with Detroit in 1976.
Vargas has hit in 26 straight dating to last September, the longest active streak in the majors and tied with Paul Goldschmidt for the second-longest in franchise history behind Luis Gonzalez, who hit in 30 straight in 1999.
Rookie left-hander Shane Drohan (1-1) gave up one run and five hits in four innings for his first major league victory after Brewers starter Brandon Woodruff left the game in the second inning after a big drop in velocity. Drohan struck out four without a walk.
Corbin Carroll and Lourdes Gurriel Jr. had two hits apiece for the Diamondbacks, who have lost six of nine.
Mitchell walked to open the Brewers' first inning off Michael Soroka (4-1) and scored on Contreras' one-out double. Jake Bauers walked, and both scored on Rengifo's two-out double for a 3-0 lead
Contreras hit a 419-foot homer after Turang singled to open the third, and Bauers singled and scored on Rengifo's groundout to make it 6-0.
Gurriel singled in a run in the fourth before Turang and Contreras had RBI singles to knock out Soroka in the last of the inning for an 8-1 edge.
Soroka gave up eight runs and 10 hits in three-plus innings, with two strikeouts and two walks.
Woodruff was removed with one out in the second after giving up a single to Gurriel and throwing one ball to the next batter, Nolan Arenado. Woodruff underwent shoulder surgery in 2023 and missed 2024 and half of last season before returning last July 6.
Frelick homered in the seventh, and the Brewers completed the rout with a run in the eighth off catcher James McCann, who was making his fourth pitching appearance of the season.
