A total of 770 free World Cup tickets have been made available to New Jersey residents for matches at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, N.J.
The New York New Jersey host committee confirmed the initiative Tuesday, made possible by donations from partners Uber and Hackensack Meridian Health.
The tickets will be spread across seven matches, excluding the July 19 final, with 500 tickets going to youth soccer clubs and families of currently deployed New Jersey National Guard members. Others will go to Hackensack hospital patients in the Make-A-Wish program and Bergen County first responders.
New Jersey Gov. Mikie Sherrill helped to make it happen. It follows last month's announcement that New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani had secured 1,000 tickets priced at $50 apiece for residents of New York.
'We are excited to welcome the world to the Garden State for the World Cup starting this week and to be at the very center of the festivities, but we want the experience, first and foremost, to be accessible and affordable for as many New Jerseyans as possible,' Sherrill said, per The Athletic. 'I will always fight to ensure that no New Jerseyan is left behind.'
Alex Lasry, CEO of the host committee, thanked those who made the ticket giveaway possible.
'I'd like to thank the Governor for her leadership in ensuring that hundreds of New Jersey residents have the incredible opportunity to take part in this once-in-generation moment,' Lasry said. 'And I'd like to thank Uber and Hackensack Meridian Health for stepping up to help us deliver these tickets.'
The 770 tickets are non-transferable to prevent resale and scalping.
The first World Cup match at MetLife Stadium will see Brazil take on Morocco on Saturday night at 6 p.m. ET.
