LONDON, May 27 (Xinhua) -- The suspect who drove a car into a crowd celebrating Liverpool Football Club's Premier League victory on Monday has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder and drug driving, Merseyside Police spokespersons said on Tuesday.
Detective Chief Superintendent Karen Jaundrill said that a 53-year-old man from West Derby was arrested and remained in custody where he was being interviewed.
Assistant Chief Constable Jenny Sims said the driver managed to bypass the police cordon by following an ambulance through a road closure and onto Water Street. The ambulance was on its way to respond to a heart attack emergency.
Sims reaffirmed that there had been no prior intelligence suggesting "an incident of this nature would take place," and confirmed that the case is not being treated as terrorism.
So far, 11 people remain in hospital receiving ongoing treatment following Monday's incident, and Sims said all are in stable condition and recovering well.
More than 50 people were initially taken to hospital for treatment after the car crash.
A car ploughed into a crowd in Liverpool city center earlier on Monday as thousands of people gathered for the celebrations. The vehicle was quickly stopped at the scene, and a male suspect was taken into custody.
Britain's King Charles III and Queen Camilla issued a statement on Tuesday, saying they were "deeply shocked and saddened to hear of the terrible events that took place in Liverpool on Monday."
"The scenes in Liverpool are appalling -- my thoughts are with all those injured or affected," British Prime Minister Keir Starmer said in a statement following the incident.
The Premier League also issued a statement, saying it was "shocked by the appalling events in Liverpool" on Monday.
"Our heartfelt thoughts go out to all those injured and affected," a Premier League spokesperson added.
