WASHINGTON, D.C.: Johns Hopkins University announced this week that it will cut over 2,000 jobs in the U.S. and other countries. This comes after President Donald Trump's administration stopped US$800 million in funding for the university.
This is the largest job loss in the university's history. The cuts include 247 jobs in the U.S. and 1,975 positions in 44 other countries. The affected departments include the Bloomberg School of Public Health, the medical school, and Jhpiego, a non-profit focused on global health.
"This is a difficult day for our community. Losing over $800 million in funding means we have to stop important projects in Baltimore and around the world," the university said in a statement.
Since taking office on January 20, Trump and billionaire Elon Musk have worked to weaken the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID). Secretary of State Marco Rubio said the administration has canceled more than 80 percent of USAID programs after a six-week review.
The Trump administration is also investigating 60 U.S. universities, including Johns Hopkins, over pro-Palestinian protests on campuses. Officials claim the protests are antisemitic, but demonstrators say they are protesting Israel's military actions in Gaza, not Jewish people.
Last week, the U.S. canceled $400 million in grants and contracts to New York's Columbia University.
