Jordan Staal's goal with 29.4 seconds to play capped Carolina's three-goal outburst in the final two minutes in the Hurricanes' 5-4 comeback victory against the Utah Mammoth on Thursday night in Raleigh, N.C.
Andrei Svechnikov and Shayne Gostisbehere each notched two goals and an assist for the Hurricanes, who have a six-game points streak (5-0-1). Rookie goalie Brandon Bussi ended up becoming the first NHL goalie in history to secure his 20th win in 24 career games by making 21 saves.
JJ Peterka scored a go-ahead goal late in the second period after two goals from Kailer Yamamoto, but the Mammoth couldn't hold on. Michael Carcone added a goal and an assist for Utah, and Jack McBain provided two assists.
Mammoth goalie Karel Vejmelka made 28 saves, but he has lost consecutive games for the first time since early December.
Yamamoto, who also had an assist, notched his first two-goal game since December 2023 and the fifth of his 347-game career.
The late flurry began with Svechnikov's power-play goal with 1:59 left with Carolina skating with a 6-on-4 advantage after pulling Bussi. Gostisbehere's tying marker came with 1:27 to play.
Svechnikov's first goal came 3:04 into the game.
Yamamoto answered for the Mammoth with a blazing shot 4:10 into the second period following a Carolina giveaway. His third goal of the road trip put Utah ahead for the first time 8:24 into the second.
Gostisbehere converted on the Hurricanes' third power play of the second period, scoring with 2:24 left. The team's leading points producer among defensemen was in his first game back after a five-game injury absence.
Just 19 seconds later, Peterka regained the lead for Utah with a blistering shot from the slot. His 19th goal of the season gave him a share of second place on the team in that category.
Carolina has a home-ice points streak of seven games (6-0-1).
